Articulation Project
Way back in 2003 Chris helped put together some Bionicle action figures his nephew had received for Christmas. Inspired by this, and after buying several figures for himself, Chris’s Articulation Series emerged. He considers this work a kind of “analog robotic technology.” This line of furniture uses low-tech joint mechanisms to allow the various elements to be arranged in infinite positions.
This was Chris’ first experience using CNC technologies, which he utilized to cut the metal pieces. Although he used computer technologies in the production process, he wanted to maintain the “handmade” characteristics of his work. He struck a balance by muddling the patina on the metal and introducing textures to selected elements.
He states, “This work is quite different from anything I’ve produced before and I have to attribute this to my drive to explore new materials and processes. I also like to think of it as an ego/alter-ego, yin/yang kind of thing.”
